What is a security deposit? How much is it and when will I get it back?

A security deposit, also known in France as “caution” (housing deposit), is the amount the tenant pays the landlord/owner when concluding the rental agreement. It enables the landlord/owner to be protected in the event of any deterioration or overdue rent which the tenant owes when they leave the dwelling.

At ARPEJ, this amount is equal to one month of rent maximum excluding charges.

It is refunded at the end of the tenant’s rental agreement, net of any rental debt.
